A variety of physical geography can be found in South Asia. Mountains, plans, plateaus, and islands are all present in this area of the world. The world's tallest mountain, Mt. Everest is also found here in the mountain range of the Himalayas. The influential social and cultural practices that thrived in India also had an impact on this region as well. Pictured to the right is the festival in India called "Holi" and is a Hindu festival that celebrates colors and love, and has also become very popular to non-Hindus in South Asia!
Buddhism began around 500 B.C. (1,000 years after Hinduism) in India. A young prince from the warrior class named Siddhartha Gautama founded the religion/philosophy/way of life. With no divine Gods at its origins, Siddhartha wanted to find a way to nirvana and enlightenment. After reaching enlightenment himself, he and his Buddhist monks spread the religion for 45 years to countries throughout Asia. After his death his monks continued to spread the religion.
