A variety of physical geography can be found in South Asia. Mountains, plans, plateaus, and islands are all present in this area of the world. The world's tallest mountain, Mt. Everest is also found here in the mountain range of the Himalayas. The influential social and cultural practices that thrived in India also had an impact on this region as well. Pictured to the right is the festival in India called "Holi" and is a Hindu festival that celebrates colors and love, and has also become very popular to non-Hindus in South Asia!
Buddhism began around 500 B.C. (1,000 years after Hinduism) in India. A young prince from the warrior class named Siddhartha Gautama founded the religion/philosophy/way of life. With no divine Gods at its origins, Siddhartha wanted to find a way to nirvana and enlightenment. After reaching enlightenment himself, he and his Buddhist monks spread the religion for 45 years to countries throughout Asia. After his death his monks continued to spread the religion. With about 360 million followers, it is one of the world's largest religions. the life of buddha animated (siddhartha gautama) crash course- Buddhism (fast forward half-way through!)

Hinduism began in India in about 1500 B.C. There are more than 800 million Hindus (followers of Hinduism) around the world, however the great majority of them live in India. The Vedas is the sacred scripture of Hinduism written over the course of centuries. Hindus believe in one ultimate spiritual power called Brahman, however Brahman can appear as many different Gods- such as Vishnu and Shiva. For this reason Hinduism can be revered as either monotheistic or polytheistic depending on who you ask. Hindus also believe in karma and reincarnation. The law of karma says that a person's actions will directly affect the quality of their next life. Hindus also believe in the central idea of ahimsa or nonviolence/non-injury. Because of ahimsa, Hindus consider many animals to be sacred, especially the cow. Devout Hindus eat only vegetarian food.
